Student Kicks Groupmate Out Of Assignment After He Allegedly Tried To Free Ride Until Submission Day

At some point, enough is enough.
Group assignments are supposed to teach teamwork, but sometimes, they end up testing everyone’s patience instead.

A student recently went viral after sharing how he allegedly removed a groupmate’s name from an assignment because the latter did not complete his part before the deadline.

What made the story gain even more attention was how many netizens supported his decision, saying the groupmate had been given enough chances.

“How is this my problem?”

In a post shared on Threads, user @aidryen_x expressed his frustration over the situation, saying that being busy with work should not be used as an excuse to neglect classes or assignments.

“How is this my problem? As a student, you should know how to manage your time.

You can’t work full time and then use that as an excuse for missing classes and not completing your assignments,” he wrote.

In the screenshots shared, the groupmate allegedly told him that he was working and busy, while the student reminded him that the assignment still had to be completed.

The student then pointed out that everyone in the group had their own commitments too, but still managed to finish their parts.

Claimed groupmate submitted AI written work

According to the student, the groupmate had earlier attempted to submit his part, but it was allegedly almost entirely written using AI.

He then told the groupmate that if he wanted to use ChatGPT, he should at least edit the work properly.

“For god’s sake, if you want to use ChatGPT, at least edit it. Not 97% AI,” he wrote in the chat.

The student also warned that if there was no update by 10pm, he would remove the groupmate’s name from the assignment.

Deadline was at 12pm

The situation became more stressful when the deadline was just one hour away.

In another screenshot, the student told the groupmate that the submission was due at 12pm and that there was still no update from him.

He wrote that he only had one hour left to finish everything and could not believe that the groupmate had left the rest of them in that situation.

He then said he had no choice but to remove the groupmate’s name from the assignment.

The groupmate later replied at around 11am, saying that he had overslept after working full time the night before and asked for some time to complete his part.

However, the student refused to take any more risks as the deadline was too close.

“No need. I can’t take any risk anymore,” he wrote.

“I removed him guys”

In a follow up post, the student confirmed that he had removed the groupmate from the assignment.

“I removed him guys,” he wrote, along with another screenshot of their conversation.

When a netizen later asked for an update, the student said the groupmate had called him, but he did not answer.

“He called me, but I didn’t answer. I had already finished his part and submitted the assignment. My lecturer even gave me an extra 2 hours to finish his part,” he said.

Netizens supported his decision

In the comments, many netizens felt that he did the right thing.

One netizen said the groupmate should have been grateful that the student still explained the situation to him respectfully despite the stress he caused.

Others pointed out how unreasonable it was for him to say he would start doing the work at 11am when the submission deadline was at 12pm.

12pm submission and he’s like ‘give me a while, I’ll do it’ at 11am,” one commenter wrote.

Another netizen shared a similar experience, saying they once had groupmates who chose the easiest parts, skipped meetings with excuses, gave no updates, and only reacted after being removed.
