The internet has a new trend, but it’s not what you’d expect. Labubu, the adorable designer toy that’s all the rage, has become the latest must-have item for not just fans, but also thieves.
Labubu toys from Popmart have taken the Internet by storm, with collectors queuing up for new releases and secondhand prices skyrocketing.
But now, more and more people are reporting their Labubu toys being swiped while they’re out and about.
According to 8world, one 17-year-old Ngee Ann Polytechnic student shared how her first-gen coffee-colored Labubu was stolen during a shopping trip on Orchard Road.
“It’s just a toy, is it worth stealing?” she said, frustrated after finding only the hook left on her bag.
While it’s unclear if the rising prices are fueling the thefts, fans are becoming more cautious about taking their toys out in public.
“I’m not bringing mine out again. If it’s going to get stolen, I’d rather keep it at home,” the student added.
Despite the growing thefts, she opted not to file a police report, saying it’s too much hassle for just a toy.
The Labubu series has become wildly popular, often selling out quickly at Pop Mart stores. Prices typically begin at around RM49 for blind boxes but can soar into the hundreds of ringgit for collectible figures.
Even K-pop stars like Lisa from BLACKPINK have posted about it.
