Most people would agree that winning the lottery usually comes down to sheer luck, but a Singaporean man seems to have found a way to put the odds in his favor with ChatGPT, at least a little bit.
A recent TikTok video has been making waves on the platform, featuring Aaron Tan, who shared his experience of winning a small Toto Lottery using an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot called ChatGPT.
AI beats the odds
In the short clip, Tan showed how he asked ChatGPT for a set of seven numbers between one and 49. The AI chatbot then provided the numbers 12, 21, 28, 26, 42, 44, and 47.
Deciding to give the lottery a go with these AI-generated numbers, Tan purchased a Toto Lottery ticket on May 4th, with a grand prize of SGD2,400,000 (approximately RM8,040,000). Much to his surprise, three of the seven numbers matched the grand prize.
From school projects to lottery picks
Speaking to WeirdKaya, he shared that the idea of using ChatGPT to generate lottery numbers came about while working on a school project with his friends.
They were using ChatGPT for research, and when one of his friends mentioned that the AI could answer all kinds of questions, Tan decided to ask for lottery numbers just for fun, especially with the upcoming SGD2.4 million draw.
When he discovered that some of the ChatGPT-generated numbers actually matched the winning numbers, Tan was shocked. He didn’t expect his $8 (RM26.80) investment to yield a $50 (RM167.51) win. Overwhelmed by his unexpected stroke of luck, he shared the winning moment on his TikTok account.
When asked if he plans to keep using ChatGPT or other AI technologies to pick lottery numbers in the future, Tan said he might do so occasionally, especially for big draws, but he will mainly continue using ChatGPT for research.
As for how he plans to use his lottery winnings, Tan said he wants to treat his family to a nice meal together, sharing the unexpected windfall with them.
