That was the resounding advice Malaysians gave after one woman revealed she spent five years in a job that barely paid her RM1,700 a month.
Her confession, posted on Threads, struck a chord with many who felt her loyalty to the company was taken for granted.
Signed off after 5 years
In her post, the woman explained that she had finally decided to resign from her admin role after years of waiting for a change that never came.

Despite giving her time and effort, her basic pay remained stagnant at RM1,700 with increments never exceeding RM50.
Admin job, basic salary RM1.7k, finally signing off. Thank you for 5 years where my salary never increased by more than RM50. Please pray that I get to explore more.”
The frustration didn’t stop at low pay.
She also revealed that her superior often humiliated her in front of colleagues for mistakes that weren’t even hers, adding insult to injury.
To make matters worse, her take-home salary after EPF deductions was just RM1,500 leaving her financially strained.
Netizens share their own struggles
Her story quickly resonated with many Malaysians, sparking a flood of comments from netizens who criticised the company for exploiting her loyalty.

One wrote bluntly: ‘5 years and salary not even reaching RM2k? The company is so stingy with increments. Should have resigned earlier. Not worth it.’
Others sympathised by sharing their own experiences, with one netizen revealing they too spent a decade in the same company before making the leap.
“I stayed 10 years with the same company. My salary never went above RM2.5k. Alhamdulillah, after I finally dared to resign, I got another job with a salary many times higher.”
A reminder to job-hop
As the comments poured in, a common piece of advice emerged: don’t stay too long in one place if your efforts aren’t being rewarded.
Many reminded that low salaries don’t just affect present living standards, but also long-term savings such as EPF which could severely impact retirement years.
