If you’ve studied biology before, you’ve probably been taught that babies will take on certain features of their parents due to certain DNA traits, thus leading some to remark that the child either resembles the father or mother.
In Singapore, a man was so sure that his newborn child didn’t share a shred of resemblance with him that it caused him to hold a grudge against his then-fiancée, culminating in him attempting to strangle her and threaten to kill both her and the child with a knife.
SG man chokes fiancée as he felt his child didn’t look like him
Shin Min Daily News reported that the man, 39-year-old Fariz, had his first look of his child at the hospital but somehow felt that the newborn didn’t look like him at all.
This then led him to have an argument with his then-fiancée at his future mother-in-law’s home at 4am on May 21, 2023.
In the midst of the argument, Fariz grabbed a knife from the kitchen and held it in his right hand while attempting to choke his fiancée, who was carrying the newborn, with his left hand.
The commotion caused his fiancée’s little sister to wake up, who immediately rushed to protect Fariz’s fiancée when she saw the chaos unfold.
The fiancée kicked Fariz while her sister shoved his hand away in order to stop him from trying to assault them again. However, he attempted to strangle his fiancée for the second time.
When that failed, Fariz threatened to kill both his fiancée and the newborn while pointing the knife towards them. Oddly enough, the fiancée didn’t say a single word throughout the whole argument.
In the end, Fariz eventually apologised to his fiancée and her sister before leaving the house.
Jailed 5 years and 9 weeks
While Fariz later married his fiancée, that didn’t protect him from the reach of the law, which eventually caught up to him.
In court on Dec 26, Fariz pleaded for mercy, saying that he truly regretted what he had done.
However, he was sentenced to five years and nine weeks in jail, along with three cane strokes for charges of criminal breach of trust, intimidation, and drug offences.
During the sentencing, the judge told Fariz to be thankful that his wife and children still took the time to visit him in prison and that his wife turned up in court to attend the hearing.
He also advised Fariz to ponder on his future while serving his jail sentence.
