In secondary school, every Malaysian student would have been taught geographical and historical facts about the country, such as the capital city of each respective state.
A TikTok clip recently went viral after a group of teens found it difficult to identify what was the capital city of Selangor, causing netizens’ jaws to drop to the ground.
‘What is Selangor’s capital city?’
In a more than a minute long TikTok clip shared by content creator Kuan Yee, it showed her approaching several shoppers at a mall and asking them to pick a number between one and three.
If they managed to get the correct number (spoiler alert: it’s 2), Kuan Yee would then ask them the following question: ‘What is the capital city of Selangor?’
Out of all the teens she questioned, almost all of them became flustered and couldn’t seem to get the correct answer.
One of the interviewees tried her luck by spouting a string of names such as Bangsar, Petaling Jaya, and Kuala Lumpur, but unfortunately it wasn’t the correct answer.
And in case you have completely forgotten your Geography lessons, the capital city of Selangor is none other than Shah Alam, where it’s home to major federal highways like the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) and Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS).
‘How could they not know?!’
While the clip has since attracted lots of views by the millions, it also attracted widespread shock and criticism from netizens who were baffled by the interviewees’ lack of general knowledge about the country.
‘What is this?! They don’t even know the capital city of Selangor?’
‘It’s weird seeing them not being able to answer the question. It’s Shah Alam weih…even I as a person from Terengganu knows this.’
‘As a Selangorian, this was painful to watch.’
Kuan Yee later wrote in the comment section that the interviewees were probably too nervous and thus gave the wrong answer. She also said the video was merely for fun and told netizens not to be too harsh in their comments.
