Coastal areas in Penang were battered by high tides and big waves yesterday (17 Sep), leaving behind a trail of destruction and, sadly, a sea of rubbish.
A viral Facebook post from Penang Walkabouts highlighted the situation at Straits Quay, where large amounts of trash—plastic bottles, containers, and styrofoam—were scattered all over the coastal pathway.

The caption, “The sea gave us back our rubbish,” resonated with many, as the waves seemed to return the garbage that had been irresponsibly dumped into the ocean.

Meanwhile, at Padang Kota Lama, popular hawker stalls were hit by large waves, with water flooding the seating area.
A video shared on the AnakPinang Facebook page showed the waves crashing into the shore, catching many by surprise.

Locals are expressing their concerns over both the unpredictable tides and the alarming amount of rubbish returning to shore.
