A Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student, who moved into her dorm using a gunny sack to carry her belongings, received much-needed assistance after a photo of her situation went viral.
On 29 September, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek shared on Facebook that she had coordinated financial support for the student, Rafida Zaiddin.
This came after reaching out to Sabah’s Chief Minister’s political secretary, Cikgu Rahman, and UMS lecturer Dr Abdullah Bade.
Fadhlina shared how Rafida’s story of arriving at the university with just a sack had touched many hearts.
Rafida, who hails from Sandakan, is an outstanding student with excellent results from Labuan Matriculation College.
She’s now pursuing accounting at UMS.
The minister added that Rafida’s story hit close to home, as she had also sent her eldest child to university on the same day.
Meanwhile, the Higher Education Ministry has stepped in to ensure that other students in need won’t be left behind.
