A netizen’s rant about receiving an RM20-angpau from an attendee at a wedding dinner held at Bukit Bintang went viral online.
According to the Facebook post, the netizen posted a photo of an angpau with an RM20 note and a lengthy letter complaining about how absurd the sum paid to attend a wedding dinner held at a Bukit Bintang hotel is.
“It costs about RM1500 for one table; if you only give us RM20, we will lose a lot!”
The netizen said that even with RM50 angpau, the host also needs to pay extra for the attendee’s dinner.
He further emphasized that it is a Chinese tradition that if you are invited to a wedding feast, you must provide angpau even if you are unable to attend.
“What can I do with RM20? RM20 can only get one Starbucks!”
Netizens: Why are Chinese banquets so toxic?
A quick check on the comment section reveals that not many people agree with the OP.
Some have suggested that such a situation is to be expected, thus we shouldn’t be too upset about it.
“Next time if you host wedding dinner again we will be careful,” a netizen joked.
