A woman was shocked to find out a Milo cost a staggering RM15.90 after having dinner with her family at a beachside resort restaurant in Desaru, Johor.
In a Facebook post by user Emoncs Tay, she shared that the surprise came on Valentine’s Day evening when the woman, looking forward to a pleasant meal with her family, was presented with a bill amounting to RM122.20.
This incident, involving the pricing of what is often dubbed Malaysia’s “national drink,” alongside an “egg-added” Indian pancake (roti canai) priced at RM12.90, has triggered a wide-ranging conversation on consumer expectations and business practices in tourist hotspots.
The meal, which she had assumed would be reasonably priced, included not just the Milo and roti canai, but also a two-piece Indian yogurt pancake and Indian wheat pancake at RM10.90 each, and a serving of Indian spiced chicken for RM32.90.
Choosing the restaurant was a deliberate decision by the woman to provide a comfortable dining experience for the elderly members of her family who were on vacation with her.
However, the high cost of what was meant to be a simple supper left her and many others stunned.

As the woman shared her experience online, the discussion quickly escalated, highlighting the broader issue of food and beverage pricing in tourist destinations.
While some social media users defended the restaurant’s pricing strategy, pointing out that the menu had clearly listed all the prices and customers should review these before ordering.
Others argued that the high prices were not justifiable, even considering the restaurant’s prime location within a beachside resort.
Netizen even calls for intervention by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs reflect the public’s concern over the need for regulatory oversight to prevent unreasonable price inflation, particularly in areas frequented by tourists.
