Despite the fierce criticism surrounding local horror film ‘Pulau’, it has exceeded expectations and raked in RM2 million in box office revenue according to GSC Cinemas.

Outside of Malaysia, the film has also seen similar levels of success in neighbouring Asian countries such as Vietnam, where it brought in RM400,000 in just 4 days.

Capitalising on this momentum, it seems that a sequel to the horror flick is set to hit the big screens again with possibly a new storyline and cast!
Pulau 2 in production phase
Speaking to Utusan, ‘Pulau’ producer Fred Chong confirmed that he has already proceeded with plans to produce a sequel to the movie and even dropped a few juicy bits about the film.
It (the criticism) has not deterred me from making a sequel. In fact, you can expect to see a collaboration between us (Malaysia) and Indonesia.

He also disclosed that the production team is currently in the process of planning and shortlisting actors for ‘Pulau 2’, with Indonesian talent potentially being considered for certain roles.
Interestingly, ‘Pulau 2’ will not be a direct continuation of the original film as Chong said that he wanted to offer a “fresh piece” while retaining the film’s multiracial aspect.
When asked about the criticism ‘Pulau’ has faced, Chong said that he prefers to focus on other projects and the upcoming sequel which is slated for release next year.
“I don’t want to say anything about other topics. I have other projects to focus on this year, so just wait for Pulau 2 next year.”

As for the international success of ‘Pulau’, Chong expressed his pride in the team and the positive reception from foreign audiences.
He also said he marks a significant milestone for the Malaysian film industry as no local film has ever achieved such remarkable results in foreign markets.
At the time of writing, no official release date has been announced for ‘Pulau 2’.
