KUALA LUMPUR – The story of YBB (Yang Bao Bei) has once again dominated the front page of social media platforms following the release of a video by YBB’s former friends and business partner, who called her out for the alleged misappropriation of money they had lent her.
The unfolding drama has also caught the attention of creative netizens, releasing a flurry of memes to express their thoughts over the ongoing fiasco.
However, one Facebook page touched a raw nerve when they posted a meme comparing a courier company with a pair of influencers who were involved in the drama.
According to the page’s admins, they were contacted by one of the influencers’ staff, who accused them of using an image without her superiors’ consent. The admins were then given an ultimatum – delete the meme or risk legal consequences.
“This is an act of copyright infringement and we will transfer the case to our lawyer if you do not remove the post.”
One of the admins told WeirdKaya that they were unable to verify the staff member’s identity and requested her to prove that she was indeed working for the influencers.
Instead of answering the question, the staff replies by saying, “You can choose not to take down [the post], but we will still take legal action.”
As for the charges that would be filed against the Facebook page should legal action be taken, the staff gave little details and accused the admin of misusing the picture to “assassinate the character” of her superiors. When pressed for more information, she simply left the conversation.
The admin stressed that there were no ill intentions behind the making of the meme.
“This was merely a satirical post and I had no other intentions.”
He also said that the meme had concealed the influencers’ identity and didn’t mention their names.
“It was for the sake of expressing my opinions over the issue. It wasn’t intended for commercial use, and I don’t get paid for making it [the meme].”
The admin told WeirdKaya that he encountered a similar issue with the same pair of influencers back in 2020.
WeirdKaya has tried contacting the influencers but received no response. As for the staff member, we have independently verified that she has appeared in several of the former’s videos.
