In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested eight high-profile individuals, including a prominent Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and senior management members of a highway concession company.
They are accused of being involved in a bribery scheme linked to two major highway construction projects in the Klang Valley worth over RM1.6 billion.
The arrests were made under the auspices of Ops Lintas, an ongoing operation targeting corruption in major infrastructure projects.
The CEO, who holds the prestigious title of Datuk, and two senior management figures have been remanded for four days until Friday. Additionally, five company owners have been remanded for three days until Thursday, reported Sinar Harian.
Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin issued the remand orders at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, following a detailed submission by the MACC.
Sources close to the investigation have disclosed that the three suspects from the highway concession company include two men and one woman.
“The company owners, all men aged between 40 and 50, were detained during Ops Lintas between 8 to 11 PM last night when they came to give their statements at the MACC Headquarters,” the source revealed.
The investigation alleges that the suspects within the highway concession company solicited and received substantial bribes from the company owners. These bribes were reportedly in exchange for awarding lucrative contracts to take over construction projects initially managed by a different company, worth over RM1 billion.
