Popular Ampang Yong Tau Foo Stall To Close After 48 Years In Business

Final day of business will be on Feb 8.
Malaysians have seen their fair share of eateries calling it a day and shutting its doors for good, and another local stall is going down the same path too.

This name of the stall is Highway Ampang Yong Tau Foo, an eatery which has served delicious and affordable food for customers within and outside of Malaysia.

FMT reported that at the height of Highway Ampang Yong Tau Foo’s business, it used to see long lines at its door and customers from Taman Melawati, Shah Alam, Kajang, and even Singapore paying a visit to taste its affordable Hakka food.

The way how its food was made was a major factor behind the droves of customers as the eatery offered Muslim-friendly options and was largely known for its in-house fish paste, which is made with premium ikan parang and fish bone broth.

However, the eatery’s fortunes took a sad turn when it moved from its original location near Ampang’s Flamingo Hotel to a house in Kuala Ampang due to the construction of the  Sungai Besi–Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) Highway, where it only attracted a handful of customers.

Speaking to FMT, Highway Ampang Yong Tau Foo’s proprietor Elaine Siow said the high licence fee of RM2,000 every six months, a drastic increase from its previous RM900 yearly fee, was what sealed the eatery’s fate.

Despite the incredible odds, Highway Ampang Yong Tau Foo’s prices continued to stay cheap thanks to Siow and her sister’s commitment to serve customers of all financial background.

We are not so business-minded as to only want to make money. We want everybody to come here and eat, not just ‘rich’ people who can afford to pay RM2 (per dish).

“We sell our food at RM1.50; some people take two bowls of rice and three dishes of yong tau foo, which is RM6 to RM9. Some of these people, we don’t even charge them for Chinese tea (RM0.60,” she said.

Unfortunately, the eatery has decided to call it a day and announced on its website that its last day of operations will be on Feb 8.

It also thanked customers for their immense support throughout its 48 years in business and said it hoped to see customers come for the final time.
