‘Please Marry!’- MP Urges M’sian Chinese To Tie The Knot & Boost Birth Rates

The Chinese marriage rate declined, the Bumiputera rate increased, and the Indian rate remained stable.
Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin is urging the Chinese community in Malaysia to consider getting married, emphasizing the importance of marriage for both individuals and society.

In a recent Facebook post with the caption “Kahwinlah 🤵‍♂️❤️👰‍♀️,” Sim shared statistics on marriage rates among different ethnic groups in Malaysia from the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM).

The statistics show that the Bumiputera marriage rate increased by 47%, from 10.9 per 1000 people in 2016 to 16.0 in 2022.

The Indian community’s marriage rate slightly decreased by 9%, from 12.2 per 1000 in 2016 to 11.1 in 2022.

Main reason: financial issues

However, the Chinese community saw a significant drop of 33%, from 9.8 per 1000 in 2016 to 6.6 in 2022.

He shared that according to the 2014 Kajian Penduduk dan Keluarga Malaysia, the main reasons for individuals aged 25-49 remaining single are financial issues, lack of suitable partners, and career focus.

Sim expressed happiness about the rising marriage rate among the Bumiputera and the stability in the Indian community, but he is concerned about the decline in the Chinese community.

“Marriage is a beautiful journey in life and important for society and the country,” Sim said. He pointed out that lower marriage rates could lead to lower fertility rates, impacting the community.

In his message, Sim encouraged everyone, regardless of ethnicity, to consider marriage.

“I agree that marriage is a personal choice, but it has wider effects like fertility rates. So, for those who haven’t married yet, kahwinlah ❤️,” he concluded.
