A Chinese temple association in Butterworth, Penang was ordered to put a halt to its upcoming Hari Raya open house celebration following a directive from the state’s Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIPP).
However, the temple responded to the directive by saying that the event was merely aimed at fostering unity within the community.
Temple not allowed to hold “religious” events
In a letter dated March 31, JHEAIPP director Datuk Marzuki Hassan informed the Thean Hock Keong Association that it was “not permitted” to organise the event.
This comes after a complaint was lodged over the event by Persatuan Anak Jati Melayu Negeri Pulau Pinang, reported Malay Mail.
Hassan said that since Hari Raya Aidilfitri is “one of the religious activities of the Muslim community”, the temple has no permission to proceed with the event.
He also added that all Islamic religious activities, including any celebration related to Hari Raya Aidilfitri, are subject to JHEAIPP’s approval.
Disappointed, but will respect decision
In a written response, Thean Hock Keong’s secretary Ng Choong Seong explained that the event was meant to “foster unity, strengthen ties of friendship, and reinforce harmony among the local community”, not trigger local sensitivities.
He added that advice had been obtained beforehand from the Penang National Unity and Integration Department, along with discussions with local mosque leaders, surau leaders, and community representatives, who raised no objections.
All food served is fully halal and prepared by catering services owned by local residents, as a show of support for the local community.
“On top of that, we also agreed to amend the event poster after receiving feedback from community leaders that the original title and venue were somewhat inappropriate.”
However, Ng said the association will respect JHEAIPP’s decision to have the event called off.
He also expressed regret that what was meant to be a “meaningful programme” would lead to a complaint being made and ultimately the event’s cancellation.
