Sinkhole At Penang Most Likely Caused By Heavy Rainfall, Says Indah Water

It's expected to be fixed within four to seven days.
Yesterday (Oct 16), we reported of a 1-metre wide sinkhole making its appearance at Taman Sri Nibong in Penang, causing a bus’s wheel to get caught within it.

Thankfully, no one got hurt in the incident and the relevant authorities have since moved into action to investigate the cause of the sinkhole.

According to the statement, Indah Water said immediate action was taken after they received complaints from the Public Works Department (JKR) and State Infrastructure, Transportation, and Digital Exco Zairil Khir Johari.

“Immediate actions were taken, including mobilising our repair teams and coordinating with JKR and the Exco’s office to implement a road closure, establish safety barricades, and redirect traffic for public safety. As of last night, IWK’s contractor has started on the repair works.

IWK’s team is still investigating the root cause, which may be due to heavy rainfall and movement to the underground pipe.

“During this time, road users are advised to use alternative routes as access to Taman Sri Nibong through Krystal Point will be temporarily closed,” it said.

Indah Water added that the sinkhole is expected to be fully fixed within four to seven days.
