The parents of a 20-year-old Chinese student who was allegedly killed at a condominium unit last week are expected to bring her ashes back to China for burial.
The victim, Li Chuyan (transliteration), was allegedly killed on June 23 and her boyfriend, Zhu Xuanqi (transliteration), has since been charged with murder at the Petaling Jaya Magistrates’ Court today.
According to Sin Chew Daily, Li’s parents were not present in court during the proceedings. Instead, they were represented by their lawyers who attended the case on their behalf.
Zheng said the victim’s remains had been claimed by the family last Friday (June 26) and were cremated the next day.
Ashes to be brought back to China
According to Zheng, Li’s family has obtained approval from the Embassy of China in Malaysia to bring Li’s ashes back to China.
Li’s parents are expected to personally bring her ashes home either tonight or tomorrow morning.
Zheng also said Li’s parents are still distraught by the loss of their daughter.
They are still very emotional and have yet to fully accept the fact that their daughter has passed away.
“The family has been briefed on Malaysia’s judicial process and have also appointed a law firm to follow up on the next court proceedings and related legal matters.”
Case mention fixed for Aug 6
The accused has been charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
If convicted, he may face the death penalty, or imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane.
The case has been fixed for mention on Aug 6, pending the submission of the post mortem and DNA reports.
