Panasonic will stop producing televisions in Malaysia as part of a restructuring exercise involving its audio and visual products business.
In an official statement dated July 27, Panasonic AVC Networks Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PAVCKM) announced that it will gradually end its manufacturing operations with around 400 employees expected to be affected.
Blu-ray player production moving to China
Along with the end of TV production, Panasonic will transfer its production of Blu-ray Disc players from Malaysia to China Hualu Panasonic AVC Networks Co Ltd in China.
The company said the changes are being made to strengthen the competitiveness of Panasonic’s AVC business.
PAVCKM will also stop producing Technics-branded Hi-Fi audio products by the end of February 2027, with production to be transferred to another company under the Panasonic Group.
Around 400 workers affected
Following the restructuring, PAVCKM is expected to cease operations by the end of March 2027.
Approximately 400 employees are expected to be affected by the end of March 2027.”
The company said it is working closely with the relevant authorities, government agencies and the Electrical Industry Workers’ Union to support affected employees.
This includes providing assistance with job placements and career transitions.
Not leaving Malaysia
Despite PAVCKM’s closure, Panasonic clarified that it will continue manufacturing certain audio products in Malaysia.
The company also stressed that its television and audio sales and after-sales services in the country will continue operating as usual.
This means Malaysians will still be able to purchase Panasonic televisions and audio products, as well as access the company’s service facilities.
Panasonic also reaffirmed its commitment to the country, saying: “Malaysia remains one of Panasonic’s key regional hubs.”
The Panasonic Group currently employs around 12,000 people across Malaysia in areas including high-value manufacturing, research and development, and corporate operations.
It added that the group will continue investing in Malaysia, particularly in high-value supply chains, while contributing to the country and local communities.
This includes providing assistance with job placements and career transitions.
Malaysia remains a key hub
Panasonic stressed that Malaysia remains one of its key regional hubs.
The group currently employs around 12,000 people nationwide across several areas, including high-value manufacturing, research and development, and corporate operations.
It added that it will continue investing in Malaysia, particularly in high-value supply.
