Going up.
Mamaks are a cornerstone of Malaysian culture as it’s the go-to place for Malaysians to hang out with friends while enjoying delicious food at an affordable price.

For Johorians however, that may come to an end starting next year as hundreds of mamak stalls within the state are considering to hike up food prices by at least 5%.

Over 300 Johor mamak stalls looking to increase food prices by 5%

As reported by Harian Metro, the potential food price hike came at the heels of rising operational costs caused by the continuous hike in raw material prices, according to Johor Indian Muslim Entrepreneurs Association secretary Hussein Ibrahim.

He added that another factor for the price hike was the new minimum wage of RM1,700, which will be implemented in Feb 2025.

Around 300 mamak restaurant operators in Johor have complained that their operational costs continue to rise significantly. The implementation of the minimum wage next year is expected to further escalate these costs.

“Additionally, we also need to start contributing to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for foreign workers. which make up 60% of the workforce. This will further add to our operational expenses.

“The increase in operational costs is mainly due to the continuous rise in raw material prices following the removal of diesel subsidies, which we are forced to absorb,” he explained.

However, Hussein said they’re still waiting for the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) to greenlight the 5% price hike.

He added that in the future, mamak stalls will have to hire local workers instead of foreigners to reduce operational costs.

Unfortunately, he noted that not many are interested despite a salary of RM2,500 per month was offered.
