Original Artist Behind Penang’s Iconic Murals Will Be Restoring It After 12 Years

Thanks for keeping Penang's street art alive!
Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic is back in George Town to restore three of his iconic murals, 12 years after he first painted them during the George Town Festival in 2012.

These murals, located on Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street, and Cannon Street, are widely recognized as ‘Children on a Bicycle,’ ‘Boy on a Chair,’ and ‘Motorbike,’ though they were never officially titled.

Wong Hon Wai, who was the EXCO in charge of Arts when the murals were first painted, is once again overseeing the restoration process.

Wong expressed his gratitude to Zacharevic for returning to revive these beloved works, which have become internationally recognized symbols of Penang’s vibrant street art scene.

The restoration is expected to be completed within a week, with Zacharevic working to repair both the paintings and the surrounding walls.

Wong emphasized that the murals have attracted global attention and played a key role in placing Penang on the map as a hub for both colonial heritage and contemporary street art.

Locals and tourists alike are excited to see the murals brought back to their original glory, ensuring they remain a part of Penang’s cultural landscape for years to come.
