A manager’s attempt to address punctuality issues with a younger employee has sparked debate online after he shared his experience on social media.
In a Threads post, the OP stressed that discipline and commitment are key indicators of a successful organisation.
Tried to have civil discussion
However, he admitted that managing employees who fail to follow basic company rules can be one of the toughest challenges at work.
According to him, the issue arose when he tried to have a calm discussion with a young staff member about repeated lateness.

Instead of apologising or showing understanding, the employee allegedly responded that punctuality was “not something he could promise”.
The reply left the manager visibly upset, prompting him to vent online.
Showed a lack of respect
In his post, he questioned whether the employee was working for the company or expecting the company to work around him, adding that attendance rules exist for a reason.
He also claimed the behaviour showed a lack of respect, not just towards management but towards colleagues as well.

Senior staff and bosses come in earlier and even work late nights back to back. Meanwhile, he comes in late every day and seems completely relaxed about it,” he wrote.
The manager added that such undisciplined behaviour can create dissatisfaction among co-workers who continue to follow the rules and carry heavier workloads.
He later shared that the employee in question is now in the process of being dismissed, after management took several internal procedures to address the issue.
Netizens’ reactions
The post has since drawn mixed reactions online, with some netizens sympathising with the OP’s frustration, while others called for better communication and clearer expectations between employers and younger workers.
‘Actually, not all Gen Z are like this. Many are committed. This is a discipline issue.’

‘If they don’t comply, just take action according to the rules and regulations. Just be professional about it.’

‘A: Gives a warning letter
B: What is this? Even coming in late gets a warning letter? Where’s the chance?
A: That’s something I can’t promise.‘
