The long-awaited Aerotrain replacement at KLIA is nearly ready. Final safety tests are now underway, and the new train system could be operational later this year.
Hoarding boards have been removed
As part of the final preparations, MAHB has also taken down the hoarding boards at the Aerotrain stations.

This reveals the newly renovated platforms and gives travelers a first look at the upgraded boarding areas.
The removal of these barriers signals that the construction phase is wrapping up and operations are close to starting.
What happened?
In March 2023, KLIA’s previous Aerotrain stalled mid-route, leaving passengers stranded on the track.
The incident led to widespread public complaints and a full suspension of the service.
First introduced in 1998, the old Aerotrain faced constant technical problems.
Although it received minor upgrades in 2010, it had already exceeded its usable lifespan.
New trains now under safety tests
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has confirmed that the new Aerotrain is undergoing final safety inspections.
The process includes 80 types of checks like emergency stops, fault detection, and system response.

Before it can be certified, one of the trains must complete 2,000 km without issues, while two others must run 1,000 km each safely.
Public has seen the train running
Many travelers at KLIA have spotted the new Aerotrain during trial runs.
These runs are a key part of the final phase before official approval is given.

We’re running final safety tests to make sure it’s safe before welcoming you onboard,” KLIA said in a post.
Launch expected by mid-2025
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has stated that the Aerotrain is expected to commence service in the second quarter of 2025.
Approval is still needed from APAD and the Ministry of Transport.
The entire train system is being replaced as part of a major upgrade.
A consortium of companies including Alstom, IJM, and Pestech, managed the installation while the airport remained in operation.

The new driverless trains will offer smoother rides, carry more passengers, and reduce waiting times between terminals.
Airport teases launch on social media
KLIA also hinted at the launch in a recent social media post.
Spotted at the terminal? Yes, that’s our brand new Aerotrain making test runs.
We’re running final safety tests to make sure it’s safe before welcoming you onboard. Stay tuned, your new Aerotrain is on the way!”
The new Aerotrain is expected to improve connectivity between KLIA’s Main Terminal and Satellite Building, helping the airport better serve both local and international travelers.
