Malaysians and Singaporeans have long squabbled (both cordially and fierily) over this age-old question: Who has better food?
While Malaysia has been awarded multiple global awards for its mouthwatering cuisines, Singapore’s hawker culture was granted a UNESCO status last year, which left a few Malaysians feeling snubbed.
The rather contentious debate was once again brought to light when a netizen named Derrick Yeo took to Facebook to share a photo of Singapore’s take on the beloved maggi goreng dish, which left him baffled over its appearance.

From the photo, the maggi goreng he bought was bright red in colour and did not look like any of the ones commonly found at mamak stalls throughout Malaysia.
In the caption, Derrick wrote: “Now I have a bad impression towards maggi goreng made in Singapore.”
“I will never buy it again! This is my first time buying maggi goreng in Singapore and I didn’t know it would turn out like this!”
The post has since been making rounds on Facebook, garnering 1.8k reactions and more than 500 shares.

This also attracted many netizens to comment and share their own opinions and experiences.
â–¼”I bought one myself before and it was equally as red.”

â–¼“This looks like the worms we use to feed flowerhorn fish with!”

â–¼“The one he ordered is called maggi goreng mamak. He should have ordered maggi goreng putih if he wants it in Malaysian style.”

Two days later, Derrick posted another photo and shared how he ordered another round of maggi goreng and expressed his happiness over its appearance.
“This time, I told the hawker I wanted it in ‘Malaysian style’ and it was delicious.
“It’s also the taste I’ve been missing so badly!”
