Netizens Shocked By RM1800 ‘Kek Lapis Sultan’ In Sarawak, Baker Explains The Pricing

The 10-layer cake weighs over 5kg and takes more than 8 hours to make.
Sarawak’s iconic kek lapis is a staple during festive seasons, but a luxurious twist on the cake has recently left netizens stunned after its price tag was revealed.

Kek Lapis Sultan in Sarawak costs RM1.8K

The “Kek Lapis Sultan” is sold for RM1,800 per tray, making it one of the most expensive layer cakes currently available in Malaysia.

According to Harian Metro, the luxurious creation was developed by 38-year-old baker Adhar Brahim from Abg K’ju Cake House in Kuching, who spent nearly a year perfecting the recipe and flavour combinations.

Based on what Adhar mentioned, the idea was to elevate Sarawak’s famous layered cake into something comparable with high-end desserts around the world.

The reason behind the price

The cake features 10 carefully crafted layers, each offering a different flavour profile. Among the ingredients used are premium butter, imported dried fruits, pistachios, chocolate, and specially selected nuts.

Making the cake is also far from simple. Adhar explained that each tray takes over 8 hours to complete, as every layer must be baked individually while maintaining precise temperature and timing to ensure a consistent texture.

The final product weighs more than 5 kilograms, reflecting the amount of ingredients and effort involved in its preparation.

Smaller portions available

Just like you and me, for the curious customers, there are smaller portions available. For those who want to try the cake without paying the full RM1,800 price, the bakery also sells smaller portions.

These include half trays priced at RM910, loaf sizes at RM310, half-loaves at RM160, and bite-sized pieces for RM9.50 each.

Production is also limited to about 200 trays, helping maintain its exclusivity among customers.

While some people may initially be shocked by the price tag, Adhar said many of his regular customers understand the value of the cake’s craftsmanship and ingredients.
