Neighbours Help M’sian Father Raise RM3,000 Registration Fee In Two Hours For Daughter’s UMK Enrollment

A Father’s Plea Goes Viral

This heartwarming story was shared on the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (Rasmi) Facebook page.

On 21 September 2024, Chinnakaruppan a/l Muthu, a retired civil servant aged 67, shared a heartfelt message with a few friends through WhatsApp.

He expressed his joy over his youngest daughter, Kalaimagal a/p Chinnakaruppan, securing a place at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality, Tourism, and Wellness.

Despite this proud moment, Chinnakaruppan’s heart was heavy with worry – his family didn’t have enough money to pay the registration fees.

Coming from a B40 family with a modest pension of just RM700 per month, Chinnakaruppan didn’t know where to turn.

His hope was that a few kind souls might be able to lend a hand. Little did he know, his message would reach far beyond his immediate circle.

The Immediate Help from the Neighbours

His post was soon shared in the WhatsApp group, where it touched the hearts of many.

Within just two hours of the message going viral, the neighbours banded together, raising an incredible RM3,000 to cover Kalaimagal’s registration fees.

Kalaimagal, who had been grappling with uncertainty about how to continue her studies, was both shocked and deeply moved by the generosity of her community.

On 1 October 2024, she proudly arrived at UMK’s campus in Kota Bharu to officially register, her financial worries alleviated thanks to the kindness of those around her.

Grateful Beyond Words

Chinnakaruppan, who is also dealing with nerve issues and asthma, couldn’t hold back his gratitude.

“Since it went viral on social media, they managed to raise RM3,000, and the money was handed to us for university expenses,” he said.

Adding to this act of generosity, the Student Welfare and Discipline Division (BKTP) of UMK’s Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni, responded swiftly through their UMK Cakna Programme.

They provided Kalaimagal with an emergency one-off donation of RM1,000, along with a laptop and a package of basic necessities, ensuring she could begin her university journey without further financial strain.

As the youngest of four siblings, Kalaimagal shared her feelings of disbelief and gratitude, saying, “I never imagined that my neighbours would go to such lengths to help me prepare for university. Their donations have eased the burden of my expenses on registration day.”

With a deep sense of responsibility, she added, “I promise to study hard and chase my dream of improving my family’s life. We are forever grateful for the support we’ve received.”

Additionally, the story also caught the attention of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Chairman, Datuk Wira Dr Asyraf Wajdi bin Dato’ Dusuki, who also extended his support to ensure Kalaimagal could continue her studies at UMK.

Kalaimagal’s journey to university may have started with uncertainty, but it’s clear that the future holds great promise for her – all thanks to the generosity of those who believed in her potential.
