Namewee’s Appeal To Have Drug Possession Charges Reduced Or Withdrawn Gets Rejected

No go.
Local rapper Namewee has failed in his appeal to have his drug possession charges be reduced to a lesser offence or withdrawn at the magistrate’s court today.

This comes after the prosecution rejected a representation letter filed by Namewee concerning the charges, reported China Press.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was charged on Jan 19 with possessing 1.57 grammes of methamphetamine in a hotel room on Jalan Conlay on Oct 22 last year.

He faces a maximum fine of RM100,000, up to five years’ imprisonment, or both, upon conviction under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

As for the second charge, he was accused of possessing 0.78 grammes of sildenafil at the same time and location.

If found guilty, Namewee faces a maximum fine of RM50,000, up to five years’ jail, or both  under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952.

He had previously claimed trial to both charges.

The court set May 29 for case management.

NST reported that on Dec 22, 2025, Namewee was freed of a charge of self-administering drugs by magistrate S. Arunjothy after the prosecution withdrew that charge following pathology results which had returned negative.

Background

Namewee’s drug possession charges were first filed after well-known Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin was found dead inside the hotel room, where he was also staying at the time.

Namewee has vehemently denied any involvement in her death, stating that the only worst thing he did was “drinking too much”.

After days of evading arrest, Namewee turned himself in to police and was remanded for six days.

The incident has since caused his life to fall into disarray, with him claiming that he now has to beg for employment after multiple gigs got cancelled.
