Curry puff in 5th place for top 100 pastries in the world list
Now, it seems that not only locals are raving over curry puffs, but foreigners as well according to a list released by international food and lifestyle website TasteAtlas.
Based on the ‘Top 100 Pastries in the World’ list posted on its website, Malaysia’s curry puff was ranked 5th, a spot below Greece’s bougatsa, a pie filled with either meat or cheese and can be traced back to the Byzantine period.
Here was what TasteAtlas wrote describing the crispy snack:
Karipap or curry puff is a small, deep-fried or baked pastry shell filled with thick chicken and potatoes curry. It is believed that the flavorful snack was invented by the Malays from the Malay Peninsula and parts of Sumatra and Borneo.
“Because of its simplicity and flavor, karipap quickly became popular outside Malaysia, especially in Thailand and Singapore.”
TasteAtlas also added that there currently are multiple versions of the curry puff, where its fillings can range from chicken or potato curry to tuna, sardine, and beef rendang.
