Imagine struggling to breathe and knowing relief is just an inhaler away—only to find out it costs more than your monthly rent.
For many in the U.S., this isn’t just a nightmare; it’s reality. Life-saving medications and treatments often come with price tags so high that people are forced to choose between their health and their finances.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, healthcare is a completely different story. Government clinics provide affordable treatment, sometimes even free, ensuring that medical care remains accessible to everyone.
This stark contrast recently became the talk of the internet after a heartbreaking story emerged from the U.S.—one that highlights just how crucial affordable healthcare really is.
Malaysia’s healthcare: accessible and affordable

Unlike in many Western countries, where a trip to the hospital can leave you drowning in medical bills, the Malaysian government ensures that healthcare remains accessible to all.
Public hospitals and clinics offer treatment at minimal costs, and in some cases, essential medications like inhalers are completely free.
This means that for many Malaysians, getting proper healthcare isn’t a financial burden but a basic right.
However, in places like the U.S., even the most essential treatments can be out of reach, sometimes with devastating consequences.
The high cost of healthcare in the U.S.

The internet was recently shaken by the story of a 22-year-old man from Wisconsin who died from a severe asthma attack—simply because he couldn’t afford his inhaler.
His family revealed that the price of his inhaler had surged from $66 (RM239) to $539 (RM2500) after it was no longer covered by insurance.
Left with no other option, he tried to manage his condition without it. Tragically, his body couldn’t keep up, and he lost his life to something that could have been prevented.
Stories like this aren’t uncommon in the U.S., where many struggle to afford basic medical care.
But in Malaysia, the situation is vastly different. Inhalers here cost as little as RM10 to RM20 at pharmacies and private clinics. Even better, those who visit government clinics can get them free of charge.
With such accessible healthcare, it’s no surprise that more and more people are looking at Malaysia as an ideal place not just to visit, but to settle down.
Why more foreigners are retiring in Malaysia

For many retirees, healthcare is one of the biggest concerns when choosing where to spend their golden years. And for some, Malaysia has become the perfect choice.
Take Andrew Taylor, a 70-year-old American who made the decision to retire in Malaysia at the age of 60.
“In Malaysia, healthcare is straightforward and accessible. You don’t have to wait long for an appointment,” he shared.
Taylor spends about RM11,500 (USD2,500) a month on his living expenses—far less than what he would need back in the U.S.
His basic health insurance costs only RM340 per month and covers hospitalisation, allowing him to live comfortably without worrying about unexpected medical bills.
But for Taylor, it’s not just about affordability—it’s also about safety. Having lived in both countries, he feels much more at ease in Malaysia than he ever did in the U.S.
And he’s not alone. Many foreigners have chosen Malaysia as their retirement home, drawn in by the lower cost of living, quality healthcare, and the overall sense of security.
