Whenever you look at this smiling hawker in Seremban, you wouldn’t guess how many battles she’s fought just to survive.
Twelve years ago, she was kicked out of her marriage home due to abuse, where her son was only six at the time. With no savings and nowhere to go, she rented a tiny room for RM350 a month and raised him alone.
She sold char kuey teow every day, earning about RM700 monthly. After paying rent, whatever little left went to food and basic expenses.
Despite the family’s struggles, her son worked hard and scored 6As in SPM, where he took his mother’s words to heart:
Study hard. Mommy has no money. If you don’t do well, I cannot help you.”
He is now in Sikamat, undergoing teacher-training. However, he needed a laptop for his coursework — something his mother simply could not afford.
Thus, she swallowed her pride and asked around for a second-hand laptop.
Kind strangers step in
Philanthropist Chee Heng Kuan, also known as Uncle Kentang, shared the woman’s story on Facebook, and Malaysians responded almost immediately.
Instead of a used unit, donors bought and sent her son a brand new laptop within 24 hours.
When Chee informed the woman, she was seen wiping tears away from her eyes as she touched by this simple act of kindness.
In the caption, Chee thanked Malaysians for chipping in and helping out a family in need.
“She raised her son alone. She had no choice. Today, she is so happy that her son received a brand new laptop. Thank you kind hearts. You all make her smile.”
