M’sians Flying To Thailand May Need To Pay More As Thai Govt Hikes Departure Tax By 53%

No more cheap flight tickets to Thailand?
International tourists leaving Thailand will soon be paying significantly more at the airport, as Bangkok announces a steep increase to its departure fee effective June 20.

Thailand has announced it will raise its international tourist departure fee by a whopping 53%, bringing the new charge to 1,120 Thai Baht (approximately RM44), starting from June 20, according to the Bangkok Post.

For domestic flights, the departure tax will also rise from 100 baht to 150 baht.

The hike is the latest move by Thailand as it reassesses how it generates tourism revenue.

Departure fees, sometimes called airport or passenger service charges, are common across Southeast Asia, but a jump of over half the current rate in one go is notable and has already drawn some criticism online.

Travellers heading to Thailand may soon need to spend more on flight tickets after the Thai government approved a higher departure tax for passengers flying out of the country.

The increase was approved by Thailand’s Civil Aviation Board and is expected to affect both domestic and international travellers.

Higher costs may affect flight ticket prices

The departure tax is usually included in the price of flight tickets.

With the increase, airlines may adjust ticket prices for passengers travelling from Thailand.

Malaysia is among Thailand’s biggest tourism markets, with many Malaysians visiting cities such as Bangkok, Hat Yai, Phuket, and Krabi throughout the year.

The higher tax may lead to slightly more expensive return flights for Malaysians travelling back from Thailand.

Thai govt says funds will improve aviation sector

Thai authorities said the increase is aimed at improving airport facilities and supporting the country’s aviation industry, according to The Nation Thailand.

Part of the revenue will also be used for upgrading airport technology and improving passenger services.

Thailand remains one of the most visited destinations among Malaysians due to its food, shopping, beaches, and affordable travel options.
