This year, the first day of Chinese New Year fell on Feb 17, while Muslims in both Malaysia and Singapore are set to begin the fasting month of Ramadan on Feb 19, the third day of the Lunar New Year.
With the two festive seasons overlapping, a heartwarming video from Singapore has caught the attention of many Malaysians as well.
Singing Ramadan wishes to a familiar CNY tune
In a video shared on Instagram, a group of Malay youths in Singapore can be seen singing a Ramadan themed song to the melody of the well known Chinese New Year classic, “Gong Xi Gong Xi”.

Instead of the usual festive lyrics associated with the Lunar New Year, the youths sang “Gong Xi Ramadan”, creatively blending the iconic CNY tune with greetings for the upcoming fasting month.
The lighthearted performance quickly drew praise online, with many applauding the youths for their creativity and festive spirit.

A shared multicultural identity
Although the video was filmed in Singapore, many Malaysians found it relatable. Both countries share similar multicultural roots, where major festivals such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Deepavali are celebrated side by side.
With Chinese New Year celebrations still ongoing and Ramadan about to begin, the overlap of the two occasions has led to heartwarming scenes on both sides of the Causeway.
For many, the “Gong Xi Ramadan” rendition is more than just a catchy mashup. It is a reminder of how diverse cultures and traditions can coexist harmoniously, something that Malaysians know all too well.
