A woman was deeply shocked and annoyed after she discovered that a popular cafe in Penang had charged her additional money for ordering several cakes for takeaway without prior notice.
The incident later went viral on social media, prompting anger from netizens and a public response from the cafe.
Charged RM8.50 for takeaway
In a Facebook post shared to the group 槟城吹水站 on Nov 2, the OP showed the receipt that was given to her which detailed how it was calculated.

According to the receipt, she had bought a total of four cakes from the cafe, all of which were packed for takeaway and came to the amount of RM85.
However, what shocked her the most was the fact that she was charged a 10% takeaway packaging fee (RM8.50), bringing the final bill amount to RM93.50.
She wrote in the caption: “Please be alert when you plan to take away cakes from the cafe as they will charge you 10% without informing you when making payment!”

The OP later said in the comments that her friend had helped her buy the cakes and did not notice the takeaway packaging fee as no one told her about it, adding that the post was made solely for public awareness.
Needless to say, the post triggered a wave of outrage among netizens, who slammed the cafe for acting deceptively to squeeze out more profit from customers.

Many also urged the OP to file a complaint with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK).

Cafe responds
Following the online furore, the cafe issued a public statement addressing the matter.
It said that in order to make customers’ experience “more enjoyable”, they had decided to get rid of the takeaway packaging fee.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused in the past and (we) truly appreciate your patience and support.
“You’re always welcome to visit us for a cup of coffee and a slice of our mille crepe cake. May every visit be sweet and delightful,” the statement read.
