A Malaysian man’s attempt to give his girlfriend some pocket money ended badly after she compared the amount to what her ex used to give her.
The private conversation went viral on Threads, where it gained over 500,000 views and sparked a heated discussion about gratitude, financial expectations and comparisons with former partners.
He transferred RM200 for food or makeup
According to the screenshot shared online, the man transferred RM200 to his girlfriend and told her she could use it to buy food or makeup.

However, instead of thanking him, she allegedly responded:
You’re telling me to buy this and that as though you gave me RM2,000.”
The man calmly explained that RM200 was all he could afford at the moment, adding that he would give her more after receiving his salary. He then asked whether she had eaten.
‘My ex gave me at least RM1,000’
His girlfriend reportedly replied by comparing him to her former partner, replying: “My ex gave me at least RM1,000. Even the minimum was RM500.”
She then questioned what she could possibly buy with RM200.
The man later shared the conversation on Threads and asked women whether the amount he gave was genuinely insufficient.

Comparing him to her ex was the real problem
The post quickly attracted thousands of comments, with many netizens criticising the woman for appearing ungrateful.
Several users said the amount was not the main issue. Instead, they felt that bringing up her ex was disrespectful and could make her current partner feel unappreciated.
“The moment a woman says, ‘My ex used to…’, that is your signal to leave,” one user commented.
Another wrote that comparing a current partner with an ex was a major red flag, especially when the man had already explained that he would give more once he received his salary.
Others questioned why a boyfriend was expected to provide regular spending money in the first place.
Some women say they would appreciate any amount
Several female users also joined the discussion and said they would be grateful even if their partners gave them a much smaller amount.
One woman said she would be happy even if her boyfriend gave her RM20, while another shared that her boyfriend once gave her RM50 and she appreciated it because she understood how difficult it was to earn money.
Another woman who identified herself as a doctor said RM200 used to be equivalent to an entire day of on call allowance after working for more than 24 hours.
“Hardworking women will understand how difficult it is to earn that RM200,” she added.
While couples may have different expectations when it comes to money, many agreed that comparing a partner’s financial ability to an ex was unlikely to end well.
