With Chinese New Year currently ongoing, homes across Malaysia are celebrating the festive occasion by setting off fireworks. But sometimes, it’s being done at a time where people are asleep.
A woman recently took to social media to call out those who disregarded the need for others to rest at night by playing fireworks at wee hours of the morning.
M’sian woman slams those who set off fireworks at 4am
Venting her frustrations in a post at the Facebook group 居銮吹水站 yesterday (Feb 4), the woman began her post by stating the post was directed at those who set off fireworks at 4am.
“To those setting off fireworks at 4am, can you be a little more considerate? It’s not just other races complaining — even as a fellow Chinese, I feel like cursing right now.
Don’t you realise it’s already the middle of the night? Just because you’re not sleeping doesn’t mean others don’t need to!
“Being jolted awake by loud fireworks — how many people do you plan on scaring to death this festive season?” she ranted.
The woman added that while she could put up with fireworks being set off between 12am and 1am during CNY, she said any time later than that was too late.
She also told those who would come up with the “you should move to Singapore” phrase to excuse their lack of consideration to instead move elsewhere as they were the “minority”.
Netizens in agreement
In the comment section, a majority of netizens agreed with the woman’s complaint, criticising those who didn’t care about others just because they wanted to have fun.
‘Over here, people are still playing with fireworks at close to 2am, and it’s the type that’s extremely loud. Don’t affect other people’s rest just for your own pleasure and consider whether a home has a baby or small kids trying to sleep.’
‘I was sleeping halfway when I heard a ‘boom’ and was awakened from my sleep. I thought I had overslept but when I saw the time, walao they were setting off fireworks at 4am!’
Another suggested that the money used to buy fireworks could instead be donated to charity organisations or old folks’ homes, which would make CNY celebrations more meaningful.
