A woman was left shocked after allegedly finding an entire plant root with soil still attached inside a sandwich she bought from a cafe in Ampang.
Sharing her experience on Threads, user @rsyarzmnn said she had ordered a beef salami sandwich for takeaway before eating it at her workplace.
“Fresh enough to plant again”
In photos and a video accompanying the post, a long root could be seen hanging from the vegetables inside the sandwich, with what appeared to be soil still stuck to it.
“Ordered a beef salami sandwich from a cafe around Ampang and received complimentary roots and soil too,” she joked.
“It was so fresh that I could probably plant it again. Food hygiene, please.”
She added that she hoped the cafe would improve its food preparation and cleanliness, stressing that no customer should have to experience something similar.
Cut the sandwich before eating it
Responding to questions from netizens, the OP clarified that she had bought the sandwich as takeaway and only opened it while at work.
Fortunately, she had cut the sandwich before eating it and noticed the root and did not experience any stomach discomfort following the incident.
The OP later left a Google review and claimed that she had made a complaint, although she did not name or tag the cafe in her post.
“I didn’t mention or tag the cafe because my intention wasn’t to shame them or bring down their business. I was simply sharing an experience that genuinely shouldn’t happen,” she explained.
Netizens divided over how she handled it
Some netizens believed that she should have contacted the cafe privately before posting about the incident online, as the business might have offered a refund or replacement.
One commenter, who said they also worked in the F&B industry, felt that publicly sharing the incident without first giving the cafe a chance to respond was unfair.
The OP replied that she also worked in F&B and prepared sandwiches at her own workplace, which was why she took food hygiene seriously.
“Refund isn’t really my main concern. Food hygiene is,” she added.
Sandwich cost over RM20
Speaking to WeirdKaya, Riesya said she purchased the sandwich on Saturday, July 18, for slightly over RM20, although she could not remember the exact price.
She said the sandwich initially appeared completely normal.
“I didn’t notice anything unusual about the smell, taste or appearance until I cut the sandwich,” she told WeirdKaya.
Riesya noticed the root immediately after cutting it and before taking another bite.
Aside from the root with soil attached, she did not spot any other dirt, soil or unusual ingredients inside the sandwich.
Cafe owner apologises and promises to review incident
Riesya revealed that the cafe owner later reached out to apologise for what happened.
According to her, the cafe said it would review the incident with its team to help ensure that a similar situation would not happen again. The owner also asked her to contact the cafe directly.
Riesya said she mainly hoped the business would take the matter seriously and improve its food preparation and quality control procedures.
“I shared my experience because I believe food hygiene is important, and I hope this serves as a reminder to ensure customers receive safe food,” she said.
She also encouraged customers not to remain silent when they encounter genuine food hygiene problems.
“I hope food businesses will pay closer attention to food hygiene and quality control.
“For customers, I hope they won’t hesitate to speak up if they encounter genuine food hygiene issues, as it can help prevent the same thing from happening to others.”
