Otters are often seen as adorable and harmless creatures, but a recent incident at Perdana Park in Tanjung Aru has shown a different side of these animals.
Recently, a Malaysian woman experienced a shocking attack by a group of otters, resulting in serious injuries.
Not only was she injured, but two individuals who came to her rescue also sustained injuries during the confrontation.

According to Sin Chew Daily, the otter attack occurred this morning around 6.30am.
The jogger was suddenly ambushed by multiple otters, which bit her head, body, and limbs, causing severe bleeding and multiple injuries.
Her cries for help were heard by other park-goers, who rushed to assist and managed to drive the otters away.
Unfortunately, at least two of these rescuers were also hurt in the process.

The severity of the woman’s injuries led to her being transported by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for treatment.
This incident is noted as the first report of otters attacking a human, according to Roland Oliver, Director of the Sabah Wildlife Department.

Oliver confirmed that the department has received the report and has dispatched a team to investigate the incident.
The team will focus on understanding where the otters came from and their local habitat.
“Although otters may appear peaceful and harmless, they can become aggressive if their territory is encroached upon,” he explained.
“Such aggression is typically a response to being provoked or threatened.” Roland added.
The Sabah Wildlife Department has urged the public to avoid approaching otters to prevent similar incidents.
Otters are protected under the 1997 Sabah Wildlife Conservation Act and are generally found in river and lake environments.
While previous sightings in golf courses and lake areas have been reported, this is the first instance of otters exhibiting aggressive behaviour towards humans.
