Food delivery riders play a crucial role in our daily lives, ensuring our meals are delivered hot and fresh.
Yet, their hard work is often overshadowed by societal stigma, with many looking down on the job as lacking financial security or prestige.
This perception recently caused a rift between a Malaysian couple.
“Have You Thought About My Feelings?”
According to Mstar, a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation between a rider and his girlfriend went viral after it was shared in a Facebook group for food delivery riders.
In the chat, the woman admitted she felt embarrassed by his job and was tired of being mocked by her relatives.
“Whenever I gather with family, everyone asks what you do for work and makes snide remarks at me. Have you thought about how I feel at that moment? They all laugh at me. They laugh at you right in front of me,” she wrote, expressing her frustrations.
Heartbroken but Understanding
The boyfriend, however, responded with both heartbreak and understanding. He explained that while he was hurt by her shame, he had never been embarrassed about her or her life choices.
“I support you with the money I earn from Grab that you’re embarrassed about, darling. My heart breaks to hear you say you’re ashamed of me because of your relatives’ comments,” he replied.
He went on to add, “It’s fine. In hard times like these, I’m looked down on. I forgive it all. Yes, you’re ashamed, but I’ve never been ashamed of how you earn your living.”
This story shows how tough it can be for food delivery riders—not just to make a living but also to gain respect from society.
Maybe it’s time we rethink how we view jobs and start appreciating people for who they are, not just what they do.
