M’sian Woman Says Parents Keep Pressuring Her To Return To Work Although Her Husband Doesn’t Mind

"I never once asked my parents for money."
A woman has expressed her disappointment after her parents continued pressuring her to find a job, despite her decision to become a full-time housewife after getting married.

According to mStar, she stopped working two months ago as she was feeling mentally and physically exhausted. She also shared that her husband has never forced her to return to work or look for a new job.

Husband never asked her to find a job

I’m married, but I still don’t have kids yet, and right now I’m not working. I just feel tired. My husband is fine with it and he never pushed me to find another job,” she wrote in a post on Threads.

However, she admitted that instead of being able to rest, she is now stressed over her parents’ constant insistence that she must work again.

The problem now is my parents. They keep pushing me to get a job because they don’t agree with me staying at home. Throughout these months of not working, I never once asked them for money. But I’m still being forced to work. Even after getting married, I’m still being pressured… it’s exhausting,” she said.

Parents may be worried about her future

Many commenters sympathised with her situation but suggested that her parents’ intentions might come from concern rather than control.

Maybe they don’t want you to feel small or regret it later. Things may be okay now, while you’re still newly married. But life doesn’t always stay the same,” one netizen wrote, adding that some parents believe it’s better for women to work before they have children.

Another commenter shared a similar experience and said parents sometimes struggle to understand that rest is also necessary.

She just wants a break

Responding to comments, the woman clarified that she has no intention of avoiding work forever — she simply wants time to stabilise herself after feeling burnt out.

Sometimes I understand that they care, but the way they push me feels overwhelming. I only stopped working for about a month before they started pressuring me again. I quit because my mental and physical state was really tired. Being forced like this makes my mental state even worse,” she explained.

She added that working again is not completely off the table — she just wants space to recover before rejoining the workforce.
