A Malaysian woman recently took to social media to share her shock after attending a job interview where the employment terms left her questioning whether the offer was reasonable sparking widespread discussion online.

In her original post, she wrote:

“I just went for an interview. This company offered a basic salary of RM1,800 for a degree holder. Annual leave is only given after one year of work, and medical leave is counted as unpaid leave. Is this normal?”

The post quickly gained attention, with many netizens expressing disbelief over the salary and benefits offered, especially for a degree-level position.

Not normal at all

Several users pointed out that the offer did not align with common employment practices and may not even comply with basic labour standards.

One netizen commented:

‘No, it’s not normal. You should report this to the Labour Department. A basic salary of RM1,800 for a degree holder, with annual leave only after one full year and unpaid medical leave, does not reflect current employment practices or basic employee welfare.

Others reacted more bluntly to the terms mentioned.

‘What? Medical leave counted as unpaid leave??? Annual leave only after one year???? That’s crazy.’

Another netizen compared the pay to jobs that do not require higher education: ‘That’s an insult. Even domestic work that doesn’t require formal education pays at least RM1,500.’

Others stressed that annual leave and medical leave are basic entitlements rather than optional perks.

“No annual leave and all MC unpaid? That doesn’t sound legal. These are the most basic things a company should provide. Benefits and allowances are supposed to be extras.”

However, some netizens noted that low starting pay remains common in certain industries, depending on the field of study and the employer.

“It depends on what degree you have and what company it is. The minimum wage is around RM1,700 and above now.”

Following the overwhelming response, the woman later provided an update, confirming that she had decided to reject the offer.
