“RM20 Coffee But No Free Straw” – M’sian Upset As Starbucks Charges 20 Sen For A Straw For Certain Drinks

Do you think a straw is necessary?
A woman was dismayed upon being charged an additional RM0.20 for a straw, despite the establishment offering straws at no extra cost with other beverages.

Opting for an iced coffee with a slight addition of sugar, the customer was taken aback when informed that her drink did not automatically include a straw. This policy seemed arbitrary, as straws were freely provided with other drinks.

Iced beverages should come with a straw.

She mentioned that it was particularly difficult to enjoy her iced beverage without a straw, as the heavier components tended to settle at the bottom, leaving only ice water at the top.

This made the straw not just a convenience but a necessity for fully experiencing the drink as intended.

The customer’s frustration was not rooted in the nominal fee but rather in the principle of being charged extra for an item that is typically considered essential for certain beverages, especially those served iced or blended.

Environmentally Friendly vs. Customer Experience

The situation highlights a growing trend among businesses to adopt more environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing the use of single-use plastics.

However, this incident underscores the importance of clear communication and consistency in how these policies are applied across different products.

This case has ignited discussions on social media and among consumer advocacy groups about the balance between environmental sustainability and customer service.

Many argue that while efforts to decrease plastic waste are commendable, businesses should also strive to maintain transparency with their customers and ensure that policy changes do not lead to confusion or diminish the overall customer experience.

UPDATE

Starbuck responded that since 2020, Starbucks has been advancing sustainability by introducing a ‘strawless lid’ for iced beverages, which uses about 9% less plastic than the traditional lid and straw combo. This eco-friendly option is now a standard offering. For drinks that need straws, like blended beverages, they continue to provide a recyclable ‘domed lid’ and have introduced a nominal charge for plastic straws to discourage their use.

They also encourage customers to bring their own Starbucks tumblers, offering a RM2 discount as an incentive. These initiatives are part of their commitment to being a resource-positive company and fostering responsible consumption habits.
