For festive occasions like weddings, angpows (red packets) are usually given to the newlyweds as a way of congratulating them as well as wishing them a happy and long marriage.
However, there are those who will never be satisfied with the amount of angpow money that’s being given to them, such as this woman who aired her dissatisfaction on social media.
M’sian woman rants about getting only RM120 angpow for her wedding
In a lengthy post shared on XUAN Play, the woman wrote that she had planned to get married four years ago but her plans got derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
When 2024 rolled around, she was finally able to act on her wedding plans and opted for a garden wedding instead of having it by the beach as she felt it was “too remote”.
However, she then faced another roadblock: the prices of goods have since soared even after the pandemic was over, where she said that everything from “wedding banquets to bridal photography had doubled or tripled in price”.
The woman then went on to touch on the subject of how much angpow money was given to her, which allowed to determine who were her “true” friends.
According to her, she had invited 100 people whom she considered as “VIPs” but was devastated to see that her generosity wasn’t reciprocated.
The reason? She alleged that her colleagues only gave her RM120 in angpow money, an amount she found to be unacceptable.
HELLO! It’s 2024! Is there still a banquet that costs RM120 per person? Do you think it’s still 20 years ago? We still have to pay 16% tax and cover the cost of alcohol. Did you think my wedding banquet is cheaper than eating at Haidilao? I’m sure even a meal there costs more than RM120.
Embittered by the angpow money amount, the woman wrote that she had decided not to be on friendly terms with her colleagues anymore and slammed those who turned up at her wedding when “they couldn’t afford to do so”.
“If it were a fresh graduate, I might understand. But have you ever thought about why the bride should lose money for you? If you can’t afford it, don’t attend. After all, it’s my hard-earned money and I invited you because I considered you to be a VIP.
“How would you feel if I only gave RM120 at your wedding? It’s 2024, please wake up!” she fumed at the end of the post.
Netizens slam woman for her pettiness
In the comment section, netizens had little sympathy for the woman as they felt that she was being petty and making a mountain out of a molehill.
‘Luckily I’m not your friend.’
‘Why should other people foot the bill in order for you to have your dream wedding?’
‘Guess your intention was to earn money through the wedding. It’s okay, you failed this time but you can try again in the future. Just pick yourself up from where you fell down.’
