M’sian Woman Loses RM4K In Angpao Cash After Luggage Zipper Gets Tampered With

Not so happy Chinese New Year.
What was supposed to be joyous trip back to Johor after celebrating Chinese New Year with her family turned into heartbreak for a woman who had all of her angpao money stolen.

She took to social media to share what had transpired and warned others to keep their belongings close to them whenever they take public transport to their destination.

M’sian woman loses RM4K in angpao cash

In the Xiaohongshu post which the OP mournfully titled Me becoming a thief’s God of Prosperity on CNY Day 7′, she wrote that she had taken a bus from the Terminal Selatan Bersepadu (TBS) station to Johor Bahru.

However, as soon as reached home and opened her luggage, she immediately felt something was wrong as the zipper slider slipped off from the zipper tape rather easily.

As she rummaged through the luggage, the OP saw that her clothes were intact, as well as the angpaos she had stored in the inner compartment. She added the angpaos were still properly sealed, leading her to believe that all was well.

Unfortunately, her worst fears came true when she opened the angpaos individually and realised the cash inside were all gone.

My heart sank—this was all my Chinese New Year red packet money, including those from my parents, relatives, colleagues, and even my year-end bonus, which was in Singapore dollars!

“After a rough calculation, I had lost at least RM4,000. I was devastated and there were no more tears left to cry,” she lamented.

Suspects bus driver was the culprit

The OP said the zipper head had been pried open to create a gap, meaning that the luggage’s contents could be accessed even with a combination lock in place.

She added that she suspects the bus driver was the one who had tampered with her luggage due to his unusual display of enthusiasm in putting her luggage into the bus’s luggage compartment.

“During the journey, the bus stopped twice—once at a petrol station shortly after departure for about ten minutes, and the second time at a rest stop for about 20 minutes so passengers could use the restroom and buy food.

“To pry open the zipper head, open the suitcase, and take each red envelope before grabbing the cash inside would have taken at least five minutes. So, I believe it’s unlikely that another passenger did it,” she wrote.

Claimed police were indifferent

Following the theft, the OP went to lodge a police report but claimed the officers showed little sympathy for her plight.

I took my luggage to the police station to file a report. However, the police seemed indifferent—maybe they thought the amount was too small.

“They said there was no evidence to question anyone and even asked me what I wanted them to do,” she added.

At the end of the post, the OP reminded others to be careful and not leave cash or valuables inside their luggage.
