A Malaysian woman was allegedly assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, who is 20 years older than her, after she reminded him to set an alarm for their plans the following day.
The woman, Liaw, who was 27 at the time, claimed that she suffered injuries to her eyes, face, head, neck, hands and legs during the incident.
Her former boyfriend has since been ordered to enter his defence after the Petaling Jaya Magistrates’ Court ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against him.
Reminded BF to set an alarm
The incident allegedly took place at around 12.30am on Oct 5, 2024 at an apartment in Seri Kembangan.
According to Liaw, she and her then boyfriend had returned home after eating hotpot. She also said he had consumed a large amount of alcohol and was partially intoxicated.
As the couple planned to visit a water park the following day, Liaw reminded him to set an alarm. However, she claimed that he complained she was being annoying before suddenly becoming violent.
He then allegedly damaged her glasses, pulled her hair and struck her around the left eye, causing her vision to become blurry and her ears to ring.
Liaw claimed that he then sat on her abdomen, repeatedly hit her and slammed her head against the floor.
Allegedly threatened to kill her
Liaw said she attempted to escape, but her ex-boyfriend allegedly picked up a table lamp and struck her head, causing it to bleed.
He also allegedly threw a chair at her, grabbed her head and slammed it against the floor and sofa.
Liaw claimed that also he grabbed her neck with both hands and continued hitting and kicking her.
When she moved towards the door, her ex-boyfriend allegedly went into the kitchen and took a knife before slashing the back of her neck and her throat three times.
He also allegedly threatened to kill Liaw, causing her to beg him to stop and follow his instructions while on her knees as she feared for her life.
Escaped and sought help from neighbours
Liaw eventually found an opportunity to open the door and escape from the apartment. She then ran towards a neighbour’s unit and repeatedly knocked on the door while covered in blood.
While the first neighbour closed the door on Liaw due to her appearance, another neighbour quickly brought her inside the unit to hide.
The neighbour then took her to Serdang Hospital for treatment and a medical examination before a police report was made at around 4am.
However, she was informed that her ex-boyfriend had lodged a report around two hours earlier, where he accused her of attacking him first.
She denied the allegation, saying that he was 180cm tall and weighed about 90kg, making him significantly larger than her.
Liaw also maintained that she only struggled and attempted to protect herself during the alleged assault.
Left unable to see clearly for two months
In her victim impact statement provided to WeirdKaya, Liaw told the court that she suffered multiple wounds and bruises around her eyes, face, head, neck, hands and legs.
She added she suffered internal bleeding in her left eye and was unable to see clearly for two months.
Her family members had to care for her during that period as she was unable to move freely and she also had to take medication for two to three months to recover from her injuries.
Liaw said she was unable to work for up to three months following the incident, resulting in a loss of income.
Apart from the physical injuries, she said the incident severely affected her mental health and daily life.
She experienced nightmares, struggled to concentrate at work and found it difficult to interact with men due to the trauma.
She also alleged that her ex-boyfriend continued to contact her through WhatsApp and even visited her parents’ home.
BF previously changed plea to guilty
Liaw’s ex-boyfriend was charged at the Petaling Jaya Magistrates’ Court on Dec 6, 2024 under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
According to reports, he initially pleaded not guilty. However, he later changed his plea to guilty during case mention on March 20, 2025.
A lawyer holding a watching brief for Liaw requested the judge to allow Liaw to deliver a victim impact statement before the sentence was handed down, which was granted.
After Liaw tearfully described the physical and emotional effects of the incident, her ex-boyfriend changed his mind again and claimed trial.
Ordered to enter defence
Following a five-day trial in which the prosecution called five witnesses, Liaw’s lawyer, Ng Mei Yi, told WeirdKaya that the magistrate ruled on July 17, 2026 that the prosecution had established a prima facie case.
Thus, Liaw’s ex-boyfriend was ordered to enter his defence, with his lawyer informing the court that he would testify and call in two witnesses.
