What was supposed to be an uneventful trip from KL to Johor Bahru (JB) turned out to be nerve-wrecking encounter for a young woman who found herself trapped inside the most unlikely place — a bus’s luggage compartment.
The incident was later shared on the social media platform Xiaohongshu, where the woman explained in detail the harrowing experience that took place on June 25.
M’sian woman gets locked inside luggage compartment of JB-bound bus
In the post, the woman said she was travelling from KL to JB and arrived at her destination at 5.50pm. When she got off the bus to retrieve her luggage, she realised that it was placed “very far inside” the luggage compartment.
As she crawled deep into the compartment to fish out her luggage, she heard the sound of the door being shut and discovered that she was trapped inside.
I banged the compartment door with my hands but no one could hear me. No one can imagine what I felt at the time…I hope nobody will go through what I did. It was really frightening,” she wrote.
Tried calling for help
After her failed attempts to alert someone to come to her aid, the woman called the bus operator which she had gotten from the booking she made earlier.
“I told the person: ‘I’m locked in the luggage compartment. Could you please call the driver for me?’ However, the person didn’t seem to understand and hung up on me.
“I then texted the number but was left on read. I quickly became breathless and dizzy and tried calling the number again as I was afraid I would faint and go unconscious,” she wrote.
Eventually, a woman picked up her call and asked her rudely why she was inside the luggage compartment, something which made her “very angry”.
No apology given
Finally at 6:06pm, 10 minutes after the woman made her first distress call, the bus pulled over and she was able to emerge from the luggage compartment, much to the shock of passengers who were waiting for the bus.
Upon getting off the bus, the woman claimed that the bus driver allegedly grinned at her while saying that he thought she had already left.
“There was no apology given! I really burst into tears at that moment,” she added.
‘We will make sure this doesn’t happen again’
In the comment section, the woman posted a photo of the conversation her boyfriend had with the bus operator, where the latter apologised over the incident.
According to a customer service representative, the driver didn’t notice the woman retrieving her luggage due to heavy rain.
“We immediately took necessary action on the mentioned driver and staff for not informing us of this issue beforehand. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and distress your girlfriend experienced,” said the representative.
WeirdKaya has reached out to the bus operator for comment and we will update this article once we receive a reply.
