A couple in their 20s were nabbed by religious authorities in Johor for allegedly committing khalwat (close proximity) at a hotel last night (July 20).
Harian Metro reported that the inspection operation was carried out by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) at around 12.30am.
Found unclothed in bed
In a statement, JAINJ said enforcement officers knocked on the hotel room door several times but received no response.
Eight minutes later, they were greeted by a man who wore nothing but a pair of shorts.
“After introducing themselves and showing their enforcement authority cards, the officers entered the room, which was dark at the time, to conduct further inspections.
They found a woman lying on the bed while covered with a blanket and a female enforcement officer instructed her to get fully dressed in the bathroom after she was found to not be wearing any clothes.

JAINJ officer also found that the couple were neither married to each other nor had mahram (close family members) relations.
During questioning, the couple admitted to travelling together in the man’s car and checked into the hotel at around 9pm, where it was entirely paid for by the man.
They claimed they were only resting and sleeping in the hotel room and had not engaged in any immoral acts.
The couple also said they didn’t return to Johor Bahru as it already late at night.
They were subsequently detained for allegedly committing khalwat and will be charged under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment at the Syariah Court.
