M’sian Woman Forces BF To Buy iPhone 16 With 36-Month Instalment Despite Being Able To Afford It Herself

"Is it selfish if I can actually afford to pay for it myself?" the woman asked.

From picking up the tab to splurging on gifts, couples often juggle between acts of love and financial fairness.

But what happens when someone’s wallet can handle the price tag, yet they still expect their partner to foot the bill?

This sticky situation rang loud and clear when the latest iPhone 16 made its way into one couple’s love life.

Recently, a post on X went viral after a girl asked her followers whether it was selfish to want her boyfriend to buy her the iPhone 16, even though she could afford it upfront.

“Is it selfish if I can actually afford to pay for the new iPhone 16 in cash since I don’t have many commitments? But I still want my boyfriend to buy it for me,” she dialled into the conversation, seeking input.

Her boyfriend, however, could only afford the phone in 36-month instalments.

With the iPhone 16 starting at RM3,999, that would mean a monthly payment of RM111, ringing up a hefty commitment over three years.

And if he were to go all out for the highest-end model priced at RM5,499, he’d be locked into RM152.75 monthly.

‘Should reconsider their relationship’

The post ignited a wave of backlash, with many netizens hanging up on the girl’s logic.

Some suggested that her boyfriend should reconsider their relationship, citing her lack of empathy for his financial situation.

Several commenters also labeled her a “gold digger,” pointing out that it’s inappropriate to demand such an expensive gift so early in a relationship. Many questioned her motives and urged the boyfriend to prioritise his own well-being over such materialistic requests
