A Malaysian woman found herself face-to-face with a consumer’s nightmare: a pack of haw flakes contaminated with fungus, bugs, and mold, despite bearing an expiration date of Dec 31, 2025.
The woman recounted her experience to WeirdKaya, revealing that she had purchased the snack from a local supermarket just a week ago.
“It’s one thing to read about others finding maggots in their food in the news, but it’s entirely different when it happens to you,” she expressed.
Fungus on haw flakes
Her alarming discovery came to light after a colleague, who was snacking on another pack, noted an odd taste accompanied by a white, cloudy substance on the surface, raising suspicions of fungal contamination.
As it turned out, several colleagues had already consumed a few packs, mistakenly assuming the unusual flavor was a “new taste.”
However, upon closer inspection of her own pack, the woman found live bugs and patches of green mold, adding a visual shock to the already disturbing situation.
Speaking to WeirdKaya, the woman shared her disbelief and horror, stating, “You always see these shocking stories about people finding bugs in their food, and now, I’m one of them.”
Haw flakes have long been a beloved snack from many childhoods, but this incident has left the woman traumatized and wary of purchasing them in the future.
