Saga = not good enough?

For many Malaysians, getting a government job is still seen as the golden ticket, stable income, pension, job security, the whole package.

But for others who’ve carved their own path in the private sector, that dream doesn’t always align with reality.

Recently, one 29-year-old woman took to Threads to vent about this very situation.

Despite building a successful career at a multinational company (MNC), she’s still being urged by her family to apply for a government position.

‘Struggled so hard to do what I love, but it’s still not enough’

In her post, she shared that she’s been working as a Business Analyst for nearly five years, drawing a salary of over RM7,000 a month, a figure that’s well above the national average.

To drive the point home, she listed her company’s perks and they’re nothing to scoff at:

  • 13th-month salary
  • Annual medical check-ups
  • Health insurance (for her and her dependants)
  • Panel clinics
  • RM500 transport allowance
  • Dental & wellbeing allowance
  • Flexible hours & hybrid work options
  • 1.5-month performance bonus

Still, her family continues to nudge her towards a Grade 19 government job, a role that pays significantly less and comes with fewer perks.

Apparently, driving a Saga means your job’s not good enough.

What hurt the most, she said, was hearing it repeatedly from her own mother. She couldn’t help but wonder: was it because of her car?

Maybe it’s because I drive a Proton Saga. Not like others with big cars. “Or maybe they just don’t know how much I earn? Should I tell them?”

A relatable dilemma

Her story quickly struck a chord with others online. In the comments, netizens shared their own experiences, advice, and a whole lot of empathy.

Many pointed out that this pressure often stems from a generational mindset that puts government jobs on a pedestal even when the numbers just don’t add up.

‘That mindset about government jobs being ‘secure’ will never go away. Just ignore them. Don’t mention your salary or your bonus. Stay quiet and do your thing.’

Others acknowledged that while MNCs come with better pay and benefits, there are risks too especially when it comes to job security.

‘Yes, the income is good, it helped me give my kids a comfortable life and good education. But job security isn’t always guaranteed. Be ready for anything. Get your own insurance, contribute more to EPF, save in ASB. Be prepared.’

Another netizen who had been in a similar spot recalled how they shut down the same kind of comments:

‘I used to get the same thing when I was earning RM3.5K. I just said ‘don’t want a government job, pay’s too low’. You don’t have to say your salary, but if you do, be ready, they’ll definitely ask. Just say even a G41 job is a downgrade.’

A recurring piece of advice across the comments was this: you don’t owe anyone details about your salary, not even your family.

‘You’re the one working. You’re the one paying bills, buying groceries, staying up late. Not them. Only HR, LHDN and your bank need to know your salary. Maybe your partner too. That’s it.

Should you tell your family your salary?

On one hand, being transparent with your loved ones might help them understand your choices better. On the other, revealing your salary could open the door to even more scrutiny, comparisons, or pressure.

Whether or not she decides to open up about her salary, one thing is certain: she’s not alone in this struggle.

And if her Proton Saga is the reason for all the doubt, well, it’s safe to say that sometimes the car doesn’t reflect the journey.
