A mother in Johor made the difficult decision of cutting ties with her son who became a drug addict and borrowed money from loan sharks.
Due to his actions, the family have been harassed relentlessly by the loan sharks, with them sending threatening messages if they failed to pay up.
Lost job in April
According to China Press, the woman named Yu (transliteration) has a total of three children, with her son being the eldest.
Speaking at a press conference, Yu said her son worked in Singapore at an electronics retailer but got in with the wrong crowd, which saw him getting addicted to drugs.

When he lost his job in April of this year, Yu’s son locked himself in his room and began exhibiting signs of abnormal behaviour.
“I noticed that he wasn’t speaking clearly or walking straight, and I immediately knew his emotional state was off. I also believed he was taking drugs,” she said as reported by Sin Chew Daily.
Loan sharks come knocking
Worried by her son’s condition, Yu made a police report and had plans to send him for rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, her son caught wind of her plan and quickly packed his belongings before leaving the house while Yu was at work. He has not been heard from since May 12.

On May 17, Yu began receiving phone calls from loan sharks, who told her that her son had borrowed RM2,000 and demanded RM8,000 as the debt was four days past its due date.
“When I said I couldn’t pay the debt, the loan sharks told me not to lie to them as they possibly knew that my daughter was working in Singapore.
“They also sent threatening messages to the family and my daughter such as, ‘don’t blame me’ and ‘you’re not settling this yourself’.”
Yu said this was the first time the family had run into trouble with loan sharks, adding that she had a low income and that her daughter is currently jobless.
As for her husband, he lives in the same house but didn’t have a relationship with her for years.

‘I still believe he’s a good person’
With no other options available, Yu made the heartbreaking choice to sever ties with her son and said she’s prepared for the worst possible outcome that might happen to him.
Despite this, she insisted that her son was a good person who went down the wrong path after mixing with the wrong crowd.
“He might have faced financial difficulties after becoming jobless and this caused him to borrow from loan sharks to fund his drug addiction.
“However, I believe he could still have a future if he met the right people,” she added.
